How to Read a Mill Test Report (MTR) Before Approving Carbon Steel Orders

A quick, practical guide to the key fields in an MTR—what to check, what red flags look like, and how Dongte Steel supports buyers with clear documentation.

Start with traceability: heat number & document match
Every MTR should tie directly to the shipment. Check the heat/batch number, order number, and item tags — they must match the pieces you received. If tags and paperwork don’t line up, don’t approve the order. Traceability is your safety net.

Verify grade, standard, and specification
Locate the material grade and the governing standard (ASTM, EN, GB, etc.). These tell you the rules the steel was made to. Make sure the MTR explicitly states the exact grade and standard you ordered — vague descriptions are a red flag.

Read chemical composition and mechanical properties
Scan the chemical table for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and other specified elements. Then check mechanical results: yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation. Values should meet or exceed your spec. Watch carbon content — higher carbon affects weldability and heat treatment needs.

Look for test methods, heat treatment, and coatings
Good MTRs list test methods (tensile, impact, hardness) and any heat treatment performed. If coatings or surface treatments are claimed, the MTR should note them or include a separate finishing report. Missing test methods or vague heat-treatment notes are warning signs.

Confirm sign-off, dates, and inspector details
A valid MTR has an authorized signature, mill name, and dates. Also check stamping or inspection certificates for third-party tests if required. Unsigned or back-dated reports undermine confidence.

Reading an MTR is like checking a car’s service history — thorough, but quick once you know the key items. At Dongte Steel, we supply clear, complete MTRs and help customers interpret every line so you can approve orders with confidence.
